The Johannesburg biennial is a very interesting case study when one would like to think about the effects of the global on the local, and vice versa, on contemporary art. Indeed, why the second and last edition of the biennial, Trade Routes: History and Geography, which appears nowadays as one of the major international exhibition of the 1990's, was such a failure on the local level?
